Karridene Beach. Shown at top: "Surfing--Karridene" photographed & published by H. Duncan Abraham, circa 1926. Karridene Beach is near Durban, which has always had the largest population of surfers in South Africa. Lower card captioned: "Bathing Enclosure Durban" (refers to shark nets), published by Valentine & Sons Cape Town, and annotated as follows: "This is where we going surfing on boards during the summer time at our Beach. Note the way the surfboards are put flat on the water & the force of the waves pushes it along until you strike the sandy shore. Love from Vi, 1926." (At the time many had not yet heard of the sport.) Both unmailed. No problems to mention. Either for $20.00. Both for $37.75. ss

"The Strand, Bundoran" showing several Irish people watching what we take to be surfers on the water (bit distant to be sure, but it is known for consistent waves); white-border era postcard in color, one upper corner chipped away but not into the image, other corner & edge wear is mild, from the Milton Fac-Simile Series No. 24, printed in Saxony. $4.00 is(s)

"71481 AFTER THE MORNING SWIM" Phostint post card from Detroit Publishing Company, a little pencil writing on lightly toned back might erase well, minor corner wear, light toning on front shows mostly in the borders. $2.50 s(s)d
"M. MAHAN & JACKSON / PRESENT / ANNETTE / Kellermann / 'THE PERFECT WOMAN' / AND A COMPANY OF 1000 PLAYERS / IN / NEPTUNE'S / DAUGHTER / THE FILM MASTERPIECE OF THE WORLD / ... / At the BREMEN / TUESDAY, APRIL 11th / HENNEGAN & CO. CINCINNATI, O." advertising on an unused undivided back postcard tabulating a detailed comparison of her measurements with the Venus de Milo! Viewers of 'Neptune's Daughter' saw her do the first nude scene ever on film. A record-holding swimmer, she performed another first--a water ballet that many credit as originating the sport of synchronized swimming. Known as 'The Original Mermaid', she performed such an act at the Princes Court entertainment center in Melbourne. Slightly longer than regular-size, we offer it as is due to its several obvious faults. $15.00 fmms(s)
"PERCY HUME. WATER SPORTS ON THE GOULBURN, SHEPPARTON, VIC." apparently the beginning of a swimming contest in a stream lined by many spectators; sepia-tone real photo mailed 1925 to USA, 3 small corner creases not in the image, slight oxidation. Location is Victoria Australia. Sold but still available for scholarly study & research as a full-size & enhanced 72-dpi scan in .jpg format. $1.50 vs#
"PETER MEYER / CINCINNATI OHIO / ONE OF THE LAST 7 TO WITHDRAW" in the 1/16/27 San Pedro Channel swim racing for prize money off California; sepia-tone Azo (squares in corners) real photo postcard, good edges. The boat at the left was for safety: the waters were frigid, the currents tricky, & many beds of kelp had to be traversed (an art in and of itself). A previous dealer mistakenly penciled CINN. O. in the left front border for location; Peter was from Cincinnati, which is why it is mentioned in the caption. If you want to read a detailed version of the race, simply get the Cincinnati Enquirer of 1/17/27 (the next day), & read the article on page 11. Rare! Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged 300-dpi scan (publication quality) in .jpg format for $3.75. s(s)c(s)ro(c)g(m)

"Tennis Court and Brown House, Haydenville, Ohio" prominently showing 2 couples at play with the ball in mid-air, black-and-white, mailed there 1909, light album marks at front corners, minor corner wear, light toning on front, internal crease not into image. Haydenville used to be a company town. We speculate that the tile company owner may have put out a few postcards such as this one to suggest an idyllic life there. That company, which later shut down in the 1960s, surely owned the house shown on this postcard. Rare. Postcard sold. Still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged (almost 2x original postcard area) 100-dpi scan in .jpg (182,576 bytes) or .tif format. $1.50 os
