GUINÉE FRANÇAISE / GUINEA
RÉPUBLIQUE DE GUINÉE / PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF GUINEA
GUINÉE FRANÇAISE. -- Isles de Loos Le Chemin du phare de Tamara" showing the
forested path to the Île Tamara lighthouse (seen at the horizon), carte
postale mailed 1908 to Rochefort Charente Inf. France (receiving mark both
sides), one lower corner with 2 faint creases most easily seen from the
back, stamp removed from the lower left front corner leaving just a bit of
tell-tale paper, tiny speckles of toning show in the front sky, wear at one
upper corner. The destination province is now called Charente-Maritime. The
island group including this view is now seen spelled Îles de Los; the French
gained them by trading their fishing rights off Newfoundland & Labrador to
the British. A later version of this view repositioned the caption so that
most of it could be easily read in the sky. Rare: no other offers or
exhibits were found when we searched the Internet. $19.00 fl
"179. - KINDIA (Guinée Française). - Passage de la Ouauoa" at a lavoir or clothes washing place attended by 3 washerwomen, their children bringing them makeshift bags (probably sheets) of clothing, some clothes already spread out to dry; carte postale with toned divided back, pinhole near the top center. We have seen two other views of this place, none of them common. $8.00 fp(w)
"CONAKRY -- Sortie de l'Eglise" showing natives leaving church, black & white, undivided back, unused, trivial wear to 2 corners. $9.00

POSTCARDS & FRENCH SOUDAN POST CARDS
"12 -- BAMAKO. Soudan Français. / Soudanaise." real photo showing a semi-nude young woman with a child at her breast, rough edges as issued, a little writing on back. Bamako is now the capitol of Mali. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged 300-dpi scan (publication quality) in .jpg format for $3.75. fmn
"1504. - SOUDAN. - SÉGOU. - Monument Gallieni, Place de la Mosquée" sepia-tone carte postale, pencil writing on back dates to 1943 but we believe it is circa 1920, long mark in stamp box will probably not erase. Then in the French Sudan, Ségou is now in Mali. $4.75 f
"280. - Afrique Occidentale / Montanes du Macina / Sépultures de Habibès à l'intérieur les plus / retirés et les plus inaccessibles de la / falaise." showing a native boy & several skulls at the entrance to cliff caves that once served as burial places for Tellern hunter-gathers & Dogons who conquered them. Then in French Soudan, now in Mali; surely one of the most inaccessible places on earth. The village of Yendouma is probably nearby at the base of the cliffs. The terminology 'Montanes du Macina' is not in modern usage & the burial of Habibès tribe members as stated in the caption is problematic at best. Despite these errors, publisher Fortier in Dakar Sénégal counted this amongst his best views, adding advertising to the back as follows: 'POST CARDS / Great choice of wiews(sic) and / natives of whole / West Africa. / COLLECTION FORTIER / on sale at FORTIER / CLOSE TO POST-OFFICE'. Because of the errors we mention, it is not likely that many were distributed like this. One of the best African postcards we have ever seen, and worthy of the finest collections of French West Africa. There is a faint small corner crease that is hard to detect from the front because it blends in with the rocks. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & artistic reference as an enlarged (about 771% of original print area) & enhanced 200-dpi scan in .jpg format. $2.00 fmmcc
"52. - Batiments des Agents du chemin de fer et la section d'Artillerie de KAYES (Soudan)" mailed TCV at Keyes Soudan-Français 4 SEP 23 (4-c stamp barely tied in same orientation as the clear one in the sky, 2 others at front bottom possibly removed by the sender when learning of the imprimée rate) at the printed matter rate to Guayaquil Ecuador (where it arrived 17 OCT 1923, no doubt after a journey by ship) where it was forwarded, small bottom corner crease, multiple creases in one upper corner affecting only sky, all corners worn & rounded. Caption translates from the French roughly as 'buildings for railway agents and the artillery section at Kayes'. The railroad would in present day be the Dakar-Niger Railway, the main linkage between Senegal and Mali. Kayes is in the west of present-day Mail, the capital of the administrative region of the same name. $15.00 fm-f
"8 -- BAMAKO. Soudan Français. / Fontaine du Marché." showing a market place fountain; real photo postcard from Michel Aris, scalloped edges as issued, small red check mark inked on back, 'Fr. Sudan' penned at top front. Now in Mali. $2.50 fm
"9 -- BAMAKO. Soudan Français. / Maisons des Artisans Soudanais." showing a market place fountain; real photo post card from Michel Aris, scalloped edges as issued, small red check mark inked on back, 'House of Soudanese Artisans / Bamako, Fr. Soudan' penned at top front. Now in Mali. $2.50 fm
"Mission des Pères Blancs / SOUDAN FRANÇAIS -- Leçon de Catéchisme" for a large group, circa-1920 carte postal with divided green back, fairly fresh, just a hint of a bend at one corner, otherwise good edges. Rare: when we searched the Internet no one else offered or exhibited this postcard, and there were only 3 other postcards total for these missionaries. The White Fathers got their name from the white cassock or gandoura that they wore (see the man standing at the left) at the time, not from the color of their skin. The location is probably Ségou which is in present-day Mali. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged 300-dpi scan (publication quality) in .jpg format for $3.75. frc
See also French Sudan stamps.
"SOUDAN : Le Niger à Mopti / Visitez l'Afrique Occidentale Française" unused postcard on thin stock, Edition Diloutremer in Paris, fairly fresh with good edges. This is the banks of the Niger River, then in French Sudan & now in Mail. Sold but front side still available for scholarly study & research as an enlarged 300-dpi scan (publication quality) in .jpg format for $3.75. fm
