Bicycle_Coey-200_small.jpg bicycling postcard available from Judnick.com"The COEY BICYCLE ATTACHMENT / Invented and patented by C. A. Coey. / Fits any bicycle. Weighs only eight pounds. / Can be folded when not in use. Can be attached in / three minutes. Greatest seller of the age. Agents / wanted. Order today. First order secures agency. / PRICE $12.00 / C. A. COEY & CO. / D-1424 Michigan Avenue / CHICAGO ILLINOIS" postcard with an enlarged black & white illustration of the attachment on back, mailed 1908 to the Romeo Electric Light Plant at Romeo Michigan. Astonishing illustration: a man, woman & child each on their own bicycle riding a railroad track, stabilized & attached to the rail they are not on by the device. [And, hopefully, not encountering a train coming from the other direction! The postcard never stated the detachment time!] This device ostensibly made a smooth paved road out of a railroad track, or so they thought. By showing a family on an outing, the ad is essentially saying "Safe enough for your entire family." By showing a woman riding a bicycle not in a public place and with her husband, she is not being depicted as the loose woman some of her day might have thought. No other offers or displays of this advertising when we searched the internet; all we could find were black & white ads that appeared in a few magazines & journals of the time. So the inventors did try to make money from the invention, but evidently their efforts did not last long. Surprised? We venture to say that the publicity of a few unfortunate accidents put this bad idea to a well-deserved rest. Hopefully not many horrific family outings resulted. $180.00 bi(c)ar(u)fg(c). See also our offering for the High Falls Railway Line in Ontario for a similar device in commercial use on that mining railroad in 1910.

Uncaptioned circa-1908 real photo postcard Cyko postcard with evenly divided back (hence 1908 or later) showing a well-dressed man (sporting a tophat & tie) riding a motorized tricycle powered with a DeDion-Bouton engine at its rear. We take it to be an early design because the wire-supported front-wheel brake design is simply not to be seen on other motorized tricycle images when we searched the Internet. The engine burned naphtha, gasoline, or petroleum making it possible for its rider to pedal, rely on the engine, or both. The gentleman is probably an undertaker going to work; the other type of well-dressed worker of the day would be a chimney sweep, who would have no use for the tie and probably tote some of his brushes to work. A few words about dating the postcard: Cyko evenly divided backs are seen from 1908 - 1920's; the last DeDion single-cylinder engine was built in 1908. That does not mean that he tricycle was built then, however. The Orient motorized tricycle with licensed DeDion-Bouton engine was produced by the Waltham Manufacturing Company from 1899 - 1901 in Massachusetts, for example. And other companies were licensees as well. Your theory as to its manufacturer can be tested by the name-plate partially visible on the steering column or by the distinctive large logo before the rider's knee -- both included in our close-up. $100.00 b NEW / NEU / NOUVEAU

Matthias & Co., / 31 Main Street  HAMILTON, OHIO / ... / HAMILTON MADE STOVES / ARE THE FINEST, BEST AND CHEAPEST / STOVES Manufactured in this Country" trade card picturing a Chinese man chasing & skewering rats from his high-wheeler bike in China. Copyrighted 1886 by Richmond & Company of Buffalo New York. While the text on the back ostensibly appeals to protectionist economics & politics, the illustration on front took advantage of racist anti-Chinese sentiments of the time. [For example, in 1882 the US Congress passed the Chinese exclusion act, which prohibited their immigration to the US for the next ten years.] A disgusting piece of social history.
